Neuroinflammation and Brain Fog: What the Science Really Says

You open the document, read the first paragraph and realise none of it has stayed with you. A name disappears mid-conversation. The easy decision takes twenty minutes. By lunchtime, your brain feels slower than the day demands.

Online wellness content may tell you this is “brain inflammation”. It is a compelling explanation—but brain fog is a description, not a diagnosis, and it cannot tell you what is happening inside the brain.

What neuroinflammation actually means

Neuroinflammation describes immune activity within the central nervous system—the brain and spinal cord. Cells including microglia and astrocytes help monitor their environment, respond to injury or infection and support tissue maintenance.

A short, proportionate immune response can be protective. Persistent or dysregulated activity is studied in neurological and psychiatric disease, ageing and cognitive decline—but those clinical associations should not be converted into a diagnosis for every distracted or tired person.
